Introduction: Small Mammal

Small mammals are perfect for many homes because they are unlikely to grow too large, have rather entertaining manners, and distinctive temperaments. Some of the most preferred pocket size creatures include the ferrets, the hedgehogs, and the sugar gliders. Still, all of the mentioned animals have specific traits and demands, which makes them appropriate for various categories of people. The need to understand these requirements cannot be overemphasized as they need to lead happy and healthy lives as our companions.

 Ferrets

Small Mammal

Ferrets are indeed active animals; they are also known to be curious animals. Ferrets are descendants of the European polecat and have been tamed for thousands of years and are popular today as pets. It is urged that they are often slender and full of fun which makes them interesting to play with and see.

  •  Care Requirements: Ferrets need to have a large cage with several perches, a countless variety of toys to keep their engaged minds busy. They require a high protein diet and are normally fed high quality ferret kibble, or light raw meat. There is a need to have the ferret under a veterinarian nearly all the time because it is susceptible to specific illnesses like adrenal disease as well as insulinoma.
  •  Social Needs: Ferrets are friendly animals that love being with their owners and with other ferrets also. They need to have at least 2-3 hours of supervised playtime daily outside of their enclosure. It means that if you have a Ferret, certain precautions need to be taken to ensure they do not get into dangerous conditions because they would get into anything.

 Hedgehogs

Small Mammal

These are small mammals with a very thorny exterior and small eyes indicative of very little aggression but immense curiosity. These night creatures originate from Africa, and they are famed all over due to their strange looks and rather easy to care for temperament.

  •  Care Requirements: A hedgehog should be kept in a large and preferably open cage with sufficient supply of fresh air and hides, a wheel for exercise and a shallow bowl for food and water. They feed primarily on hedgehog food of good quality augmented with insects and produce such as fruits and vegetables’. Temperature control is strictly important when it comes to the need of hedgehogs as they are sensitive to cold weather conditions.
  •  Social Needs: Thus, hedgehogs are social animals but can interact with the owner and do not need company from other hedgehogs. Dealing with them on a daily basis right from childhood assists in making them lose their natural fear of people.

 Sugar Gliders

Small Mammal

Sugar gliders are relatively small size caviomorphs, living in trees in Australia and New Guinea. They are regarded for their amazing talent in flying across the sky by means of a skin or membrane that stretches from their wrists to their ankles. Owing to their social demeanor and playful conducts, humans find them interesting to be given the task for petting.

  •  Care Requirements: The basic requirement of a cage for sugar gliders is tall and large with provisions for branches, nesting pouches, and toys. They cannot simply swallow anything they come across and they need to consume protein often in the form of meat, fruits, vegetables, and specialized glider food. Cool and fresh water should be available at all times for use for the deities, the less privileged in the community and other users.
  •  Social Needs: Sugar gliders as a species are nocturnal animals and are recommended to be kept in pairs or groups of gliders. Living in groups of two or three is advised to avoid loneliness and other related vices. They attach themselves with the human minders and therefore they should be frequently interacted with to be healthy socially. Although they are carnivorous animals that have active life during the night, they are best suited as a family pet depending on the owner’s lifestyle.

 Conclusion

It is important to note that there are many species of small mammals and acquiring any of them as a pet requires understanding the needs for care and temperaments of each species. The ferret can give you a different experience as well as challenges compared to the hedgehogs; still the sugar gliders present another form of experience with a pet. Anyone who wants a small mammal should take time to study the kind of living environment, diet, and social interaction their animals require to be happy and healthy. If treated well and given much attention, these animals can be a source of happiness and friendship in each home.
