Introduction: Devon Rex

The Devon Rex is a unique breed of cat known for its alien-like appearance. They are very active, sociable and friendly. They have a thin wavy coat that comes in a wide range of colors and patterns.  They are intelligent, curious and always seeking attention from their owners. They are often called pixie cats or alien cats because of their appearance. They have outgoing and friendly nature, they are friendly with other pets. History and Origin

The Devon Rex cat was first discovered in Buckfast leigh, Devon, England in 1960.  The first Devon Rex cat was named Kirlee. The first Devon Rex cat was imported to the United states in 1968.  In 1979 Devon Rex received official recognition from CFA – Cat Fanciers’ Association. Breeders then began to breed Devon Rex focusing on maintaining the unique wavy coat. Today , the Demon Rex cat is available throughout the country.

Physical Characteristics

The Devon Rex cat is small in size and muscular body, weights between 6 and 9 pounds and they stops growing after 12 months.  They have an unusual appearance with large rounded ears, big eyes and small triangular head. They have thin, soft wavy coat that come in a wide range of colors and patterns. Their eyes are large and oval-shaped. They love to cuddle with their owners and other pets in the family. Their back legs are slightly longer than their front legs. They are powerful jumpers.

Temperament and personality

The Devon Rex are known for engaging personality and playful behavior. They get along with other pets because of their sociable nature. They form a strong bond with their owners. They are very curious, they love interactive toys, climbing, and exploring. They are very intelligent and can easily be trained to use puzzle-toy and perform tricks. They are not talkative as other breeds. 

Exercise and activity needs 

The Devon Rex is an active and playful cat so they need moderate amounts of exercise. Physical exercises like jumping, climbing, running etc helps them to be physically fit and healthy, mental exercises like playing with interactive toys, puzzle toys, social interactions etc helps them to be mentally healthy. By providing these physical and mental exercises they will be healthy, happy and well-defined. 

Grooming and care

The Devon rex cats need minimal grooming since they have thin and breakable coat. They have sensitive skin so it is not necessary to brush them frequently. Activities like nail trimming, eye cleaning, ear cleaning, dental care, diet and hydration etc can be done to ensure their good health. Regular attention to their coat, eyes, ears and overall health will keep them healthy and feeling their best.

  • In order to ensure its silky and shiny coat it is recommended to use slicker brush. 
  • One must know that they should not over wash their cat’s coat as it can damage and degrade its coat quality. 
  • Bathing once a few months with high quality shampoo is much better for their coat’s and overall health.
  • Clean their ears, trimming nails, brushing their teeth with high quality toothpaste are some major cleaning activities.

Health and common concern

Devon Rex are generally healthy but like all other breeds they can also suffer from certain health issues. There are several conditions we should be aware of. They are :-

  • Patellar luxation
  • Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM)
  • Devon Rex myopathy
  • Hip dysplasia
  • Polycystic Kidney disease

  • Taking your cat to the veterinarian for regular checkups at least once every 14 weeks is recommended.
  • Feed them nutritious and protein condense foods like fish, milk, authentic cat foods etc.
  • Never neglect the hydration of your cat.
  • Giving them necessary vaccines to fight various bacteria and allergies is necessary.
  • Socializing and interacting with them by playing is an important activity for their mental health as well as physical health.
  • Proper sanitation and clean environment is a must for minimal risk of bacterial diseases.
  • If any sudden sickness you should immediately seek help from respective professionals.

Devon Rex are known for their intelligence, sociability, and playful nature which makes them easy to train. By giving training they can develop into well-behaved, confident and friendly companion.
