Airedale terrier

The “King of Terriers” Airedale Terrier comes from a rich history of having a wide range of abilities. This breed was bred in Yorkshire, England and is a mixture of Old English Black and Tan Terrier and Otterhound with other crosses.

They are the largest British terriers weighing typically between 19-25 kilograms with 58-61 centimeters height with males being taller than their females. Distinctive for their harsh topcoat and soft undercoat, they have medium-length black and tan coats. They have a keen expression on their face and a small erect tail which makes them seem energetic.

Temperament

Airedale Terriers are outgoing, confident, and intelligent with traits like the terrier group. They are known to be fearless and display remarkable courage while not being too aggressive. With proper training and socialization, Airedales become excellent family pets, known for their loyalty and affection.They excel in various roles ranging from hunting and retrieving to being loving friends.

Health

Airedales are less issued dogs with a median lifespan of about 11.5 years. However, like all breeds, they might be prone to certain health issues like hip dysplasia, skin conditions and gastric dilatation volvulus (bloat). With regular veterinary check-ups, a balanced diet, and regular exercise, one  can help maintain their health.

History

In the histories, people knew Airedales as working and hunting dogs. They were taught to tackle large river rats along the River Aire in the mid-19th century. Airedales have also served during World War I as messengers and search dogs by displaying courage and loyalty in the battlefield.
