Thompson who was from San Francisco. Later Dr Joseph decided to bred Wong Mau and Tai Mau (a Siamese Cat) and then the foundation of this breed was established. They are recognized by CFA in 1952 and TICA in 1979.

The Burmese cat has a short hair but can vary from various different colors. They are approved on the basis of various colors by some of the major cat associations making them one of the most complex breed in the cat world.

- The International Cat Association: Approves variety of colors like rich sable brown, a warm blue, a honey-beige with pink or fawn tints, a lilac that ranges in tone from a bright pinkish-grey to a silvery-platinum with pink tints, golden apricot with melon-orange overtones, cream with hints of apricot, and various shades within a tortoiseshell pattern.
